Women in ancient drama at conference in Delphi

Women in ancient drama is the theme of the XIII International Conference on Ancient Drama in Delphi in July. The meeting is part of a busy program this summer at the European Cultural Center of Delphi. The center, founded in 1977, is celebrating its 30th anniversary and, together with the Constantine Karamanlis Foundation, is commemorating 100 years since the birth of the late Greek president and 50 years since the signing of the Treaty of Rome. The symposium opens officially on July 6 with «Horses and Armor,» an exhibition of sculpture by Alexandra Athanassiadis, and a performance of Heiner Mueller’s «Medea Material,» directed by Anatoli Vasiliev and Valerie Deville. Until July 15, academics, actors and directors from Greece and abroad will address every aspect of the topic in lectures, discussions, readings and performances («Iphigenia in Aulis» and «Electra» among others). The conference includes a tribute to the 80th anniversary of the first Delphic Festivals and the 100th anniversary of Eva Sikelianos’s arrival in Greece, as well as a meeting of young artists with workshops, performances and discussions. Eighteen rarely exhibited costumes from the collection of the National Theater of Greece will be on display at the Delphi Center from July 7-16, curated by set designer Koula Galioti. Among the selections are costumes designed by Antonis Fokas for Atossa, played by Athanassia Moustaka in 1947, and Jocasta, played by Katina Paxinou in 1960. The tribute to Constantine Karamanlis and the Treaty of Rome runs July 22-23. Leading politicians from Greece and Europe have been invited to speak on subjects ranging from the European idea to the legacy of Constantine Karamanlis.
