Hasta pronto not adios, was the message at the farewell party for Alberto Cano at Kathimerini yesterday. After 10 successful years as regional director in Athens, Cano is moving to the same post at El Pais in Madrid, where he will assume additional duties. One of the original team in the International Herald Tribune-Kathimerini joint venture that created Kathimerini English Edition, which is published with the IHT in Greece, Cyprus and Albania, Cano will continue to represent IHT-El Pais in Spain, Portugal as well as the Middle East and the Mediterranean. A well-liked, capable and cooperative colleague, when asked what he had got out of being at Kathimerini for 10 years, Alberto said, «It made me very proud.» And he explained: «We spread our wings, we gave English speakers current affairs and reliability with news from journalists at Kathimerini and the English Edition that often went beyond borders, as articles by local staff members have appeared with their bylines in newspapers abroad. Kathimerini English Edition is number one in the field, and Greece acquired an international voice and is a source of opinion for international readers, thanks to the Internet.» So said Alberto at the friendly party at Kathimerini’s offices in Faliron, with drinks and snacks, and the mixed feelings of bidding a colleague farewell but also seeing him go to an equally challenging post, in Madrid. Alberto goes home to Spain after his experience at one of Europe’s historic papers, Kathimerini, with a zest for more success and new plans. So it’s not adios, but hasta pronto, dear colleague Alberto. Nikol Karali, who has been with us since 1999, will become circulation manager.
