Heart Pillows: Easing pain for breast cancer victims

October is a month dedicated to breast cancer awareness campaigns worldwide. One such international initiative is the Heart Pillow Project. Made and donated by volunteers, Heart Pillows were originally handed out to patients who had just come out of surgery at the Erlanger Breast Resource Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The project crossed the Atlantic in 2006, on the initiative of a member of the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas residing in Denmark. Through the American Women’s Organization of Greece (AWOG), the charity campaign is currently unfolding in Greece, with the 30-centimeter heart-shaped pillows being made and donated by its members. The first batch is expected to be handed over to patients at the Aghios Savvas hospital by Thanksgiving. Donations Meanwhile AWOG is encouraging all those who wish to make donations for the purchase of fabrics as well as pillows (suggested donation 15 euros). Heart Pillows are especially designed for patients who have undergone a mastectomy, to ease pain as well as reduce lymph swelling under the arm.
