Spring Greek Sale by Sotheby’s coming up in London next week

Well-known auction house Sotheby’s is about to have its spring Greek Sale in London. The event, which will take place on April 17, will include 10 paintings by Constantinos Volanakis, seven by Georgios Iakovidis as well as works by The-ophilos (Hadjimichael), Theodoros Rallis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika and Constantinos Parthenis. The auction will further feature works by Nikos Kessanlis, Alekos Kontopoulos, Yiannis Gaitis, Panayiotis Tetsis, Yiannis Spyropoulos, Nikos Engonopoulos, Spyros Papaloukas, Constantinos Maleas, Marios Prassinos and Yiannis Tsarouchis. One of the most important paintings of Constantinos Volanakis, well known for his seascapes, is «Along the Coast.» The landmark work is estimated to fetch between 391,449 and 652,690 euros. Other important works of his also in the auction are «Along the Coast, Volos» (estimated at 261,075-391,449 euros), «Sunset Over a Greek Port» (estimated at 130,537-195,806 euros) and «Fishing on Calm Waters» (estimated at 104,429-156,644 euros). Georgios Iakovidis’s «Grandpa’s New Pipe» (estimated at 261,075-391,449 euros) is also considered a major work. Acclaimed naif artist Theophilos will be represented through two rare works. The first, titled «The Death of Markos Botsaris,» is a monumental, 169×261-centimeter piece, estimated at 253,694-380,603 euros. One of Theophilos’s largest works, it depicts the legendary Markos Botsaris, the Greek fighter who played a pivotal part during the Greek revolution. The second work, «Karaiskakis at the Battle of Faliron» is expected to fetch between 253,694 and 380,603 euros.
