Bookstore tries to mix art with soccer

For those of you looking for company with whom to cheer on Greece’s performance in Euro 2008, the Ianos bookstore has set up its own «team» at its cafe, as it has also done for other major sports occasions. Greece’s matches – after yesterday’s against Sweden, they will play Russia on Saturday and then Spain next Wednesday – will be shown on three screens, with commentary by well-known personalities from the arts world. Against all the stereotypes, in which the arts and soccer are viewed as two entirely unrelated realms, Ianos is proving that the two can mix just fine. The bookshop’s in-house commentators, not just for the Greek games but also for the quarterfinal and semifinal matches as well as the finals, will include Vassilis Papavassileiou, Mimis Androulakis, Giorgos Lianis, Aris Sfakianakis, Giorgos Xenarios, Minas Vintiadis, Yiannis Triantis and others. Viewers are also free to comment at any given moment during the games. Gatherings will start at 8.45 p.m., one hour before the kickoff and there will be ouzo on offer.
