Prominent sax soloist directs Piraeus ensemble

Under the artistic direction of Theodore Kerkezos, the Saxophone Orchestra of Piraeus Prefecture continues to make its mark – and quite understandably. In 2006, Kerkezos was named Artist of the Week by the Naxos recording label – the artist’s «Impressions for Saxophone and Orchestra» album having topped the charts. The following year, the saxophone soloist was nominated for a Grammy. Established as a vehicle for educational and charity concerts, the orchestra was founded in 2003. Right from the start, in April 2003, people’s response to the newly founded ensemble was reassuring for its future. Numerous concerts followed in Greece and abroad. Comprising 10 musicians, the orchestra was recently in Southern Italy. From Naples to Sardinia, the ensemble gave a dozen concerts and two master classes and was warmly received by demanding audiences. The orchestra’s activities continue tomorrow, with an appearance on Zakynthos, at the Dermatoussa outdoor theater of Arkadion municipality. Next stop is the island of Aegina for two concerts, both part of Piraeus Prefecture’s series of cultural activities. On August 30, the ensemble is scheduled to appear in the main square of Aegina’s municipality of Kypseli, followed by an evening at the island’s folklore museum the following day.
