Katherine Jenkins returns to capital

he striking Katherine Jenkins, a soprano with the stage presence of a Maria Callas, returns to Athens after her last performance at the Panathenaic Stadium two years ago alongside Placido Domingo. The Welsh crossover mezzo-soprano, who is not yet 30 years old, is the UK’s favorite vocalist and gives hundreds of performances each year at some of the world’s greatest music halls. Her first album, «Premiere,» has racked up the fastest sales made by a mezzo-soprano album, after those of Maria Callas. This talented young woman has succeeded in combining classical music and pop culture with her voice and personality, without, however, lowering her standards of interpretation. About a year ago, she published her autobiography, which was also presented in excerpts in the newspaper Daily Mail. Three months ago, she released the album «Sacred Arias,» which has already topped the classical music charts in Britain. Jenkins will perform this Thursday at the Athens Concert Hall (tel 210.728.2333).
