Lighting designer makes her debut as a playwright at Roes with ‘Meet Market’

«I will break my window, if you break yours.» In Christina Thanassoula’s play, which is being staged at the Roes Theater (16 Iakchou, tel 210.347.9426), the leading characters are trapped in shop windows. A man and a woman blindly follow mainstream rules and appearances are all that matters. «Meet Market» is the first play by Thanassoula, a lighting expert who has been working in theaters and on musical stages for some years, to actually make it to the stage. She started off as an assistant to lighting designer Eleftheria Deko and has been working on her own for the past few years. «Writing is no stranger to me,» she answers when asked how she found the time to produce a play. She started writing before getting involved with light design – she studied at Athens University’s Theater Studies Department. In 2001, she sent a one-act play to a competition held by the Municipal Regional Theater of Volos, for which she received an award. Although the play was supposed to be staged according to the competition procedure, it never was. «I am always writing to relax. It is like psychoanalysis. I enjoy both light design and writing. I couldn’t write constantly. I also have a good time designing lighting.» «Meet Market» is directed by Alexandra Georgopoulou, with lighting by Thanassoula. It is on stage Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starring Rasmi Soukouli and Takis Sakellariou. IOTA SYKKA
