Some 30,000 fans disappointed as Depeche Mode gig canceled

At about 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, about 30,000 fans waited for Depeche Mode to take the stage at the Terra Vibe park. Instead, the group’s publicist walked on stage and announced that the concert had been canceled due to the sudden illness of its frontman Dave Gahan. There was loud booing and rumors started flying: Some had seen him faint, while others asserted that he had argued with his Greek wife. Though some of the rumors were laughable, it is doubtful that any of the people who had made the trip to the 37th kilometer of the Athens-Lamia highway were smiling. Concert organizer DiDi Music issued an initial statement on Tuesday, followed by a second yesterday. In the latter, the organizers noted that, despite hoping for Gahan’s quick recovery and the concert taking place on May 13, a report from the band’s management and his doctor said that his health was too fragile. An announcement regarding a new date or the concert’s complete cancellation is expected shortly.
