Architect’s lesser-known artistic side
Alexandros Tombazis is known to the wider public mostly for his significant architectural work, as well as his essays, in which he has expressed his thoughts and views on architecture. Yet Tombazis is also very active as an artist. The public now has the opportunity to see that other side of Tombazis, in the exhibition that opened last night at the Zoumboulakis Gallery, featuring gouaches on handmade paper, collages, sculptures and photographs. This lesser-known aspect of the architect’s work highlights his unique perspective. According to the exhibition’s curator, Katerina Koskina, «On Common Ground» reveals the things that Tombazis likes to focus on as well as the way that he can depict images, objects and landscapes as shapes and structures in a way that highlights their intrinsic logic. She adds that he draws his inspiration from his surroundings and daily life and chooses to isolate or recreate various aspects. He also suggests different ways to take advantage of materials and subject matter that might, at first glance, seem indifferent and unimportant. The exhibition runs to January 30.
