Weak blue chips push index downwards

Soft blue chips outweighed mild mid-cap gains on the Athens bourse on Tuesday, dragging the general index 0.15 percent lower in thin Christmas Eve trade. The market, closed on Wednesday and yesterday, will open again today. Heavily battered telecom equipment maker Intracom rebounded, gaining almost 1 percent. The benchmark general index ended at 1,765.16 points, while Intracom ended up 0.90 percent at 4.46 euros. Intracom shares have fallen about 60 percent this year. Blue chips eased 0.26 percent; mid-caps gained 0.45 percent, while small-caps eased 0.10 percent. Turnover eased to 58.42 million euros from 74 million euros on Monday with 21.4 million shares traded. «Trading volume is pitiful but understandable, given that a number of European bourses are shut for the Christmas holiday,» said one analyst. Winners beat losers 162 to 131, with 59 shares unchanged on 352 traded. (Reuters)
