Moderate rebound on local bourse

The Greek bourse staged a rebound on Wednesday after its sharp fall on Tuesday, although it failed to hold on to significant mid-session gains registered by most stocks while turnover was considerably reduced.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,541.02 points, rising 1.02 percent from Tuesday?s close at 1,525.50 points. However, during the course of the day it had risen by as much as 2.03 percent.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index ended the session 1.35 percent higher at 709.09 points.

Eurobank EFG led the blue chips, posting a rise of 4.19 percent, followed by Ellaktor (up 4.18 percent), Hellenic Postbank (2.57 percent) and Alpha Bank (2.35 percent). National Bank added 1.63 percent.

The only blue chips to head south were Marfin Investment Group (down 1.27 percent), OPAP (0.32 percent) and Viohalco (0.25 percent).

In total, 97 stocks moved up, 52 went down and 50 remained unchanged. Sanyo and Mochlos led the gainers with 10 percent growth apiece, while Alapis posted the biggest loss, amounting to 26.09 percent.

Turnover came to just 86.2 million euros, down from Tuesday?s 133.5 million.
