Stock gains trimmed

Local stocks rebounded on Wednesday after the significant decline witnessed on Tuesday, but proved unable to hang on to the gains they had registered during the course of the session as selling pressure increased on European markets in the afternoon.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 1,611.09 points, climbing 1.30 percent from Tuesday?s close at 1,590.44 points, although at mid-session it had posted gains of up to 3.06 percent. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 1.40 percent to end at 752.23 points.

The only blue chip to go down was Bank of Cyprus, losing 1.08 percent, while Alpha Bank led the gainers (up 3.66 percent), ahead of Marfin Investment Group (3.53 percent) and Viohalco (2.44 percent).

In total, 113 stocks moved up, 46 went down and 57 remained unchanged. Elfico led those rising with growth of 18.18 percent, while Imperio posted the biggest loss, amounting to 18.60 percent.

Turnover came to 131 million euros on Wednesday, down from 159.5 million on Tuesday.
