Media blackout cheers shoppers
A four-day strike by Greek journalists helped ease consumer concerns about the poor state of the economy, providing a boost to retail sales for the length of the walkout, according to the Piraeus Traders Association (PTA).
The strike over pay demands, which ended at midday on Monday, resulted in a four-day media blackout across the country and provided a temporary block to talk of more austerity measures, possible debt restructuring and news of a three-year long recession.
?It is not our intention to quieten the media… we agree with their concerns,? said the PTA.
?However, as part of their [strike] action, we could rest our minds, stomachs and souls that have been filled with expectations of an economic Armageddon we have been literally experiencing.?
