Main index expands marginally

A balanced session on the local bourse on Thursday saw as many stocks post gains as those that registered losses, with most banks helping the main index to avoid ending another day in the red.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 1,401.16 points, rising by just 0.08 percent from Wednesday?s close at 1,400.06 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index went up 0.04 percent to end at 629.55 points.

Alpha Bank and Eurobank led the blue chips with gains of 3.95 percent and 3.94 percent respectively. They were followed by Public Power Corporation (up 3.81 percent), Motor Oil (2.06 percent) and Piraeus Bank (1.94 percent). Heading south were Marfin Popular Bank (down 2.47 percent), Coca-Cola HBC (2.39 percent) and Viohalco (1.98 percent).

Bucking the trend among banks, National suffered a 0.40 percent drop despite temporarily posting gains of over 3 percent. Its stock closed at 5.03 euros.

In total, 72 stocks moved up, 72 went down and 46 remained unchanged. Altec and Ridenco posted the biggest rise with gains of 20 percent, while Imperio led the losers, shedding 19.23 percent.

Turnover came to 92 million euros, up from 78.3 million on Wednesday.
