Foreign airlines avoid Athens

Regional airports, such as the Ioannis Kapodistrias on Corfu, are attracting more and more foreign airlines as a result of their exemption from airport charges for the summer season, which this year has been stretched to the end of 2011.

Charges per flight at regional airports average 163 euros, while an airline must pay 945 euros per flight at Athens International Airport.

Low-fare airlines are starting to take Athens off their schedules, opting for smaller airports around the country.
