Stocks dip on blue chip losses

Although the majority of stocks posted gains in Wednesday?s bourse session, blue chips and the main index suffered losses after a selling spree during the last few hours of trading.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,328.10 points, dropping by 1.39 percent from Tuesday?s closing at 1,346.87 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index fell 1.73 percent to end at 593.56 points, but the mid-cap FTSE/ATHEX 40 index expanded by 0.12 percent.

Elaktor outperformed among blue chips with growth of 2.77 percent, followed by Mytilineos (up 1.17 percent) and Piraeus Bank (0.97 percent). Viohalco was the worst off, registering a fall of 4.20 percent, while Marfin Popular Bank shed 4.11 percent and ATEbank declined by 3.64 percent. Alpha Bank contracted by 3.56 percent and National Bank suffered losses of 2.46 percent.

In total, 77 stocks moved up, 58 went down and 49 remained unchanged. Altec posted the biggest rise with gains of 20 percent, while Ridenco led the losers, shedding 14.29 percent.

Turnover came to 108.3 million euros, up from 67 million on Tuesday.
