New cabinet and energy prospects boost bourse

The broad cabinet reshuffle, favorable reports about the Greek energy landscape and the rises posted by most European markets buoyed the country’s main bourse index higher on Tuesday after the long weekend.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 840.71 points, adding 1.29 percent to Friday’s 830.01 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX-25 index expanded by 1.04 percent to 282.38 points.

Industrial blue chips led the way, with Viohalco adding 11.04 percent and Corinth Pipeworks increasing by 10.95 percent. Piraeus Bank added 5.60 percent on the last day of its share capital increase.

In contrast, National Bank fell 5.85 percent and Alpha Bank gave up 1.28 percent.

In total, 73 stocks posted gains, 52 recorded losses and 24 were unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 51.1 million euros, down from last Friday’s 69.5 million.
