Penny stocks a growing breed on ATHEX

Still in search of news that could set it on a rising course, the local stock market posted marginal losses on Tuesday, with turnover remaining desperately small and the number of penny stocks registering an increase.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 860.74 points, shedding 0.37 percent from Monday?s closing figure of 863.90 points.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dipped 0.78 percent to end at 355.84 points.

Once again Eurobank EFG and Alpha Bank led losers among blue chips with respective losses of 9.38 percent and 6.29 percent. Ellaktor dropped 5.81 percent. Coca-Cola HBC outperformed with gains of 3.50 percent. Marfin Popular Bank added 3.45 percent.

In total, 50 stocks moved up, 81 went down and 56 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 48.1 million euros, against 37 million on Monday.
