Banks lead bourse?s index to moderate rebound

Banks gave the Greek stock market a late boost on Tuesday, although the lack of cash flow has seen daily turnover shrink to no more than 50 million euros.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 791.19 points, climbing by 0.83 percent from Monday?s closing figure of 784.65.

The blue chip index expanded by 1.07 percent to end at 324.25 points. However, the small-cap index gave up 0.25 percent.

Alpha Bank led blue chips with gains of 5.88 percent, followed by Piraeus Bank (up 4.55 percent) and National Bank (4.26 percent). Marfin Investment Group declined by 3.85 percent.

In total, 57 stocks moved up, 61 went down and 54 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 44 million euros on Tuesday, down from Monday?s 47 million.
