Homeowners’ group claims six-fold increase in tax

An association representing property owners has warned that the government?s recent and future plans to raise real estate taxes will mean a 600% rise in the levies paid by owners in just three years.

The Hellenic Property Federation (POMIDA) says that the recently passed emergency property tax, which will be levied through electricity bills from this month along with an adjustment in the real estate values applied by tax offices will lead to the burden on owners being six times higher in 2012 than in 2010.

Property tax raised 500 million euros in 2010. This figure is projected to rise to 1.1 billion euros this year and in its 2012 budget, the government plans to garner 3.8 billion euros from real estate levies.
