Bank index take another beating

Banks had another day of losses on the local bourse on Tuesday, as their sectoral index ended up dropping 13 percent by the end of the session, forcing the main index down almost 2 percent.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 725.45 points, shedding 1.97 percent from Monday?s closing figure of 740.06. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index declined by 3.92 percent to 282.16 points. Mid-caps, however, added 1.63 percent.

Eurobank EFG led the losers, giving up 20 percent, while Titan cement grew by 6.42 percent.

In total, 49 stocks moved up, 99 went down and 19 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 51.8 million euros, edging up from 48.9 million euros on Monday.
