Bank stocks keep bourse afloat

Bank stocks propelled the Greek stock market on Thursday in a session during which the main index moved from positive to negative and back five times, clearly demonstrating the nervousness of investors.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 742.76 points, adding 0.25 percent to Wednesday?s closing figure of 740.93. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index rose 1.62 percent to close at 293.34 points.

Marfin Investment Group soared higher with a 21.10 percent jump, followed by Hellenic Postbank (up 10.78 percent) and National Bank (8.98 percent). OTE telecom gave up 3.94 percent and Jumbo declined by 2.24 percent.

In total, 92 stocks moved up, 47 went down and 27 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 37.7 million euros, down from Wednesday?s 40.3 million.
