Bank index takes tumble to its lowest since 1989

The Greek bourse suffered fresh losses on Monday as the outcome of the eurozone summit last Friday failed to convince the markets that a solution to the bloc?s debt problems had been reached.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 661.77 points, declining by 2.08 percent from Friday?s closing figure of 675.80 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index shrank by 2.94 percent to close at 255.93 points.

The banks sectoral index slid to its lowest point since 1989, as National Bank lost 12.64 percent, Alpha Bank declined by 11.69 percent and Hellenic Postbank dropped 11.40 percent.

In total, 44 stocks registered gains, 103 posted losses and 17 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 32.6 million euros, up from Friday?s 26.3 million.
