Lenders see their stocks suffer big losses

Bank stocks slumped on the Greek bourse on Friday after news filtered through that Monday?s meeting of eurozone finance ministers had been postponed and investors sought to capitalize on recent gains.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 762.15 points, declining by 3.82 percent from Thursday?s closing level of 792.44 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gave up 5.87 percent to close at 315.87 points, although small-caps made marginal gains of 0.20 percent.

The banks index dropped 11.8 percent on Friday, with Piraeus shedding 19.19 percent, Hellenic Postbank losing 18.83 percent and Alpha falling 18.52 percent.

In total, 46 stocks registered gains, 105 posted losses and 24 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 71.6 million euros, down from Thursday?s 89.9 million.
