Coca-Cola and OTE secure gains for index

Coca-Cola HBC and OTE telecom kept the local bourse afloat on Wednesday despite losses sustained by the majority of banks following a statement by Alpha Bank announcing that its merger with Eurobank was off.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 744.77 points, growing by 1.35 percent compared to Tuesday?s closing level of 734.88 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index added 0.47 percent to close at 297.41 points.

The banks index lost 8.40 percent, with Hellenic Postbank shedding 4.41 percent. However Coca-Cola HBC gained 6.40 percent and OTE added 5.04 percent.

In total, 72 stocks registered gains, 62 posted losses and 39 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 62 million euros, rising from 46.3 million on Tuesday.
