Investors show hopes for a pro-bailout government

Moderate optimism regarding the formation of a pro-bailout government after the Sunday election has begun to settle among local investors, with the Greek bourse posting notable gains on Wednesday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 499.56 points, adding 2.09 percent to Tuesday?s 489.35 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew by 2.75 percent to close at 182.96 points.

Alpha Bank led the blue chips with gains of 10.23 percent, while OPAP contracted by 3.71 percent. METKA will join the blue chip index as of Monday, replacing Hellenic Postbank, ATHEX announced on Wednesday, while the power plant builder gained 5.98 percent.

In total, 77 stocks posted gains, 41 registered losses and 26 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 33.1 million euros, up from Tuesday?s 22.4 million.
