Finance Ministry to appoint tax supremo

The Finance Ministry is to appoint a specially-assigned official to oversee the collection of taxes as the government attempts to clamp down on evasion and raise more revenues.

Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras informed EU Task Force chief Horst Reichenbach on Tuesday that a general secretary for taxation would be appointed within the next few months.

The official filling the newly-created post would be responsible for overseeing the financial crimes squad, tax offices and other tax-related bodies. He or she would be appointed for a five-year term.

The government plans to submit three tax bills over the next few weeks and legislation creating the new position will be included in one of them.
