OPAP leads bourse index to recovery

As European markets staged a collective shudder on worries about the Spanish and Portuguese economies on Wednesday, the Athens bourse managed to reverse earlier losses and rally to a positive finish.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 755.09 points, adding 0.38 percent to Tuesday?s 752.20 points.

Nevertheless, the blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index contracted by 0.07 percent, to close at 273.31 points.

OPAP put an end to its five-day losing streak with gains of 4.92 percent, outperforming all other blue chips. Eurobank Ergasias followed, expanding by 3.57 percent. OTE telecom shrank by 5.06 percent.

In total, 63 stocks secured gains, 71 suffered losses and 27 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 44.6 million euros, down from Tuesday?s 48.1 million.
