Late selling spree sees bourse index decline

Short-term investors cashed in on their recent gains toward the end of Tuesday?s session on the local bourse, sending most stocks lower and the benchmark index over 20 points below Monday?s closing figure.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 873.51 points, shedding 2.29 percent from Monday?s 894.01 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index contracted by 2.02 percent to close at 329.71 points.

Cyprus Popular Bank again led the blue chips as it climbed 13.79 percent, followed by OPAP (up 1.02 percent). METKA declined 5.39 percent and Motor Oil dropped 4.96 percent.

In total, 44 stocks posted gains, 100 registered losses and 31 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 26.5 million euros after the first hour, but eventually came to no more than 90.1 million euros, down from Monday?s 134.2 million.
