Nicosia suffers blackout as officials discuss Cyprus-Israel power cable

Nicosia was hit by a power failure for more than one hour on Thursday, affecting nearly all of the Cypriot capital?s consumers, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator said.

The city?s power supply was interrupted at 11.20 a.m., leading to a blackout in most of Nicosia, and electricity was fully restored by 12.42 p.m., the operator said in a statement.

The cause is being investigated.

The outage came on the day that energy officials from Cyprus, Israel and Greece were meeting in Nicosia to discuss construction of an electricity cable to link Israel and Europe via the island.

The 2,000-megawatt subsea cable will ensure power to Cyprus, which isn?t connected to other European grids.
