Athens: A bargain this December

Athens ranks among the cheapest city destinations in Europe this December, with online prices for hotels in the Greek capital posting a decline for the fourth consecutive year.

Data from the online booking company Trivago showed that Athens is the seventh cheapest among 24 European cities as far as hotel rates are concerned, with the average price for a twin room standing at 71 euros per night. This is 7.8 percent cheaper than December 2011, when the average rate had stood at 77 euros per night.

Compared with 2008 rates, which averaged out at 100 euros, the decline comes to 29 percent.

Athens is also benefiting from renewed interest in terms of conferences, a key niche market. Officials at the City of Athens and the Athens Convention Bureau reported major last-minute booking interest for corporate meetings and events in the Greek capital at the EIBTM conference tourism exhibition in Barcelona last week.
