Credit sector hopes fuel stock gains

The gains registered by stocks on the local bourse over the last couple of days, on the back of optimism regarding the credit sector’s recapitalization, have raised hopes that the benchmark could clear the psychological 1,000-point level in the not-too-distant future.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed on Thursday at 970.93 points, expanding by 2.11 percent from Wednesday’s 950.84 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX-25 added 3.08 percent to end at 323.09 points.

Banks soared 15.81 percent as Piraeus jumped 18.61 percent and Eurobank added 17.62 percent. Piraeus Port Authority gave up 0.42 percent.

In total 94 stocks posted gains, 46 suffered losses and 27 stayed put.

Turnover grew to 82.2 million euros from Wednesday’s 48.9 million.
