Greek media firms owe 51.9 mln euros in unpaid social security tax, minister says

Greek media companies owe more than 50 million euros in unpaid social security contributions, which is roughly equivalent to the annual budget of the journalists’ insurance fund EDOEAP.

Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis informed Parliament that 51.9 million euros in contributions are owed by companies in the media sector, which has been badly affected by the crisis.

Vroutsis said that this is money that has been withheld from employees salaries (3 percent) and money that the firms have collected from customers via the advertising duty known as “angeliosimo” in Greek.

A number of outlets that owe money to the state have closed.
