Rising streak ends with losses for most blue chips

Losing stocks outnumbered gainers in Tuesday’s bourse session as the main index gave up just under 1 percent during another quiet day on the local market while turnover slumped to the fourth-lowest level of the year.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 866.90 points, shedding 0.86 percent from Monday’s 874.40 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index declined by 0.68 percent to end at 294.45 points.

National Bank recorded respectable gains (up 3.11 percent) while most other blue chips headed south, led by Viohalco (down 4.20 percent), Frigoglass (3.13 percent) and Alpha Bank (3.10 percent). OPAP gave up 1.08 percent on the day it signed the contract for the operation of Greece’s state lotteries.

In total 57 stocks reported gains, 65 sustained losses and 21 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 22.8 million euros, down from Monday’s 29.5 million.
