Local bourse’s benchmark edges closer to 1,000 pts

The benchmark index of the Greek bourse came within a whisker of the 1,000-point mark on Tuesday as a late rally saw it reverse early losses on the strength of the positive opening at the New York Stock Exchange.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 999.91 points, adding 0.67 percent to Monday’s 993.23 points.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index grew by 0.06 percent to end at 343.97 points, but the small-cap index continued the decline it had started on Monday, giving up 1.43 percent.

Bank stocks outperformed with gains of 2.10 percent, as Alpha rose 3.91 percent. EYDAP, one of the most volatile blue chips, posted a 5.33 percent rise. Viohalco kept falling on Tuesday, dropping 3.64 percent.

In total 78 stocks reported gains, 60 sustained losses and 18 closed unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 51.8 million euros, up from Monday’s 42.5 million.
