Benchmark index clears 1,000 points

After 74 bourse sessions, the benchmark index of the Athens bourse climbed above the 1,000-point mark on Wednesday thanks to a marginal increase at the end of the day assisted by gains for OPAP.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,000.81 points, adding 0.09 percent to Tuesday’s 999.91 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index contracted by 0.24 percent to end at 343.16 points, while the small-cap index maintained its southbound course for a third day, sliding 0.85 percent.

It is becoming clear that the market is not yet ready to jump higher, considering how long it has taken it to make the 1,000-point level. All eyes are now on developments at the US Federal Reserve.

Blue chips presented a mixed picture, with Intralot growing by 2.99 percent, Terna Energy and Mytilineos by 2.29 percent, and OPAP by 2.18 percent.

Marfin Investment Bank declined by 2.44 percent, Eurobank Properties fell 1.82 percent and Coca-Cola HBC shrank by 1.22 percent.

In total 70 stocks recorded gains, 68 suffered losses and 24 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 53.4 million euros, up from Tuesday’s 51.8 million and the highest of the last five sessions.
