Tourism driving Greece’s economy

The Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE) conference on Tuesday saw the presentation of the «Tourism Strategic Planning 2021» report by McKinsey for SETE, which forecast that tourism will be the driving force behind the Greek economy for at least the next eight to 10 years, representing over 35 percent of the country’s growth and 38 percent of its employment increase.

The study proposed the creation of a strong portfolio of six tourism products: The old sea-and-sun model, conference tourism, city breaks, cultural interest tourism, maritime tourism and medical tourism.

Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis noted that tourism will have a central role in the next EU subsidy period (2014-20), adding that it is leading the way toward Greece’s economic recovery.
