Huge increase in arrivals by air and road

Nearly 1 million more people from abroad visited Greece by plane in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period in 2012, according to Civil Aviation Authority data seen by Kathimerini.

Arrivals from abroad at all of the country’s airports reached 12.7 million in the year to end-September, up from 11.7 million last year. In September alone arrivals by air posted an increase of 11.6 percent exceeding 2 million, from 1.86 million in the same month in 2012.

Incoming road traffic from abroad also posted a considerable rise of 300,000 people or 25.4 percent in the first six months of the year, the latest Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data showed. Arrivals by road reached 1.55 million in the year to end-June, up from 1.25 million in the first half of last year, mostly thanks to an increase in visitors from Turkey.
