‘Never on Sunday’ say retailers in Hania, Crete, over November 3 opening

Retailers in Hania are protesting a government decision to allow shops to open on Sunday ahead of the start of Greece’s first fall sales period on November 1 with posters depicting the late actress Melina Mercouri in the 1960 Jules Dassin classic “Never on Sunday.”

The Cretan retailers’ association is among several groups around the country resisting the liberalization of the retail sector and a decision to allow shops to operate on the first Sunday of two additional sales periods, on top of the customary two in winter and summer.

Greece’s first fall sales will last to November 9.
