Sunday opening fails to boost winter sales, say retail experts

Store owners did not see any upturn in their business on Sunday, when shops in some Greek cities opened, according to industry representatives.

Stores opened on Sunday as part of a new initiative but despite being the first weekend of the sales period, the head of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE) said that turnover was no different to any other day.

“Yet again, Sunday revenue did not make an impression since it was no different other days,” said Vassilis Kokidis. “It has been clear since the start of the winter sales that customers are waiting to receive their salary or get their pension at the end of the month before they make any purchases.”

The ESEE president added that the first week of the sales period saw turnover at similar levels to last year.

The sales are due to last until February 28. ESEE estimated that turnover in this sales window will reach about 5 billion euros, down from 5.5 billion in 2013.
