‘Fresh’ to be removed from milk packaging in Greece

The word “fresh” will be taken off pasteurized milk packaging as part of market changes being promoted by the Development Ministry in line with recommendations from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The ministry’s proposal provides for abolishing the five-day standard, so that each producer will be allowed to determine the precise expiry date of his produce depending on the method of pasteurization used.

The Agricultural Development Ministry is against the proposal, fearing a price hike. However, it has not yet tabled an alternative proposal that would satisfy the country’s creditors, who are putting pressure in favor of opening up the dairy market.
