Benchmark goes up due to late rally by bank stocks

Stocks presented a mixed picture at the end of Wednesday’s session, but the benchmark still managed to close higher for the fourth day in succession thanks to a rally during the closing auctions on gains recorded by banks.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 1,187.48 points, adding 0.56 percent to Tuesday’s 1,180.92 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 25 expanded by 0.70 percent, closing at 383.08 points, but small-caps declined by 0.11 percent.

Eurobank Properties outperformed with 6.02 percent growth, ahead of Hellenic Petroleum, which climbed 3.10 percent in its third straight session of gains. Piraeus Bank followed, adding 2.56 percent. EYDAP contracted 2.29 percent.

In total 52 stocks posted gains, 61 suffered losses and 17 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 63.4 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 96.7 million.
