State debtor numbers grew in September

Over 850,000 taxpayers chose not to pay their taxes in September in anticipation of the new payment programs the government had announced it would introduce. The new state debtors will be able to enter the 100-tranche plan with a minimum payable amount of 50 euros.

This is expected to have an impact on the budget revenues in the coming months, which are of particular concern to the Finance Ministry. Its data showed that in September the number of debtors soared by 35 percent, reaching up to 3,303,110 from 2,451,909 at end-August – i.e. an increase of 851,201 taxpayers.

The total amount of debts to tax authorities and customs came to 68.4 billion euros, of which 51.77 were created up to end-December 2012 and the remaining 16.67 billion expired from January 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014. Ministry data also showed that no more than 187,000 debtors entered the previous two government-proposed payment programs.
