Stock profits proved smaller than expected at the opening

The local stock benchmark’s streak of losses may have been broken, but Tuesday’s early gains of 3 percent had been whittled away to less than 1 percent by the end of the session, as traders’ political and economic expectations appeared to crumble.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 769.77 points, adding 0.88 percent to Monday’s 763.09 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index expanded 1.23 percent to end at 227.46 points.

Three out of four systemic banks’ stocks were non-movers on Tuesday, but Piraeus made up for that by adding 8.96 percent and posting the day’s highest trading volume. Public Power Corporation climbed 4.48 percent and OPAP rose 3.66 percent, while Grivalia Properties gave up 3.31 percent.

In total 56 stocks advanced, 45 contracted and 22 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 71.6 million euros, up from Monday’s 63.7 million.
