Hopes for more cash give Athens bourse a 3 pct boost

Expectations that the European Central Bank will ease its policy toward Athens slightly after the prime minister’s meetings with top European officials, thus allowing for more cash to Greece, sent local stocks higher on Monday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 766.51 points, adding 2.97 percent to Friday’s 744.42 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index expanded 3.66 percent to end at 230.13 points.

With the banks index advancing 8.56 percent, Eurobank expanded 11.63 percent and Alpha Bank rose 10.76 percent. Marfin Investment Group added 10.07 percent. Piraeus Port Authority fell 1 percent.

In total 76 stocks headed up, 42 went down and 16 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 131 million euros, down from last Friday’s 204.5 million.
