ATHEX: Stocks rise almost 2 pct this week

Stocks were almost equally split between gainers and losers in the Greek bourse’s last session of the week as the drop posted by the banks index was to a large extent offset by increases for other blue chips such as Coca-Cola HBC and OPAP, as well as mid-caps.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 838.95 points, shedding 0.131 percent from Thursday’s 841.54 points. On a weekly basis it added 1.95 percent.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index contracted 0.28 percent to close at 251.41 points, but mid-caps staged a 2.59 percent advance.

Traders’ decision to cash in on bank stocks’ gains this week inflicted a daily loss of 2.04 percent on the sector’s index. Alpha declined 4.90 percent and National dropped 2.38 percent, while Grivalia Properties outperformed with a 4.97 percent rise.

Hellenic Petroleum lost 2.64 percent on the day of a large fire at one of its installations that left one person critically injured.

In total 55 stocks reported gains, 53 sustained losses and 16 closed unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 70.4 million euros, down from Thursday’s 125.9 million.
