Gov’t considering small tax on ATM withdrawals

The Greek government is considering the introduction of a small levy on ATM withdrawals in view of encouraging the use of credit cards in transactions, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Tuesday.

Speaking to the press, Varoufakis said the coalition was also examining a 15 percent tax on undeclared deposits held by Greeks in foreign banks.

At the same time he ruled out levies on local bank deposits.

The minister also expressed his optimism with regard to Greece reaching an agreement with the country’s partners and creditors by June 5, on the day a 300 million euro payment – one of four installments of a total of 1.6 billion euros – is due to be made to the International Monetary Fund.
