Greece asks to defer Friday’s IMF tranche, pay all 1.6 bln together by end-June

Washington – Greece has submitted a request to the International Monetary Fund to pay all of its installments to the organization together by June 30, according to sources.

Kathimerini understands that the Fund will approve the request. This process is allowed by the IMF’s regulation but has only been used once before.

Greece was due to pay close to 300 million euros to the Washington-based body on Friday. Athens has to pay a total of nearly 1.6 billion euros to the IMF this month.

The delay to Friday’s payment gives the cash-strapped government more time to reach an agreement in its negotiations with lenders.
