Committee to see banks hand over account data to state

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is planning to have all bank accounts cross-checked against incomes declared to tax authorities in a bid to combat tax evasion and in hopes of having an immediate impact on state coffers.

His ministerial decision provides for the setting up of a committee that will determine how the details of all bank deposits will be transferred to the tax authorities. Banks will send all bank account data to the ministry’s Taxis system, which will compare them with the declared incomes of every taxpayer.

The decision dictates that the committee should comprise representatives of the Bank of Greece, the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE), the Hellenic Bank Association (HBA) and the ministry’s General Secretariat for Public Revenues.
